It Doesn’t Take Common Sense to Know…That We Have Stopped Dreaming

I must start by saying that the title is kind of stolen from a concept put forward by Dr. Neil deGrasse Tyson in his book the Space Chronicles and his testimonies before the Senate about the downsizing of the United States space program. I am going to elaborate more and give my own ideas, but if college has taught me anything I must give credit where credit is due. Super Moon 2012

Tonight, May 5, 2012, The moon will make it’s closest approach to planet earth this year.

The technical term for when the moon is at the closest point to earth is “Perigee”.  At Perigee, it is about 12.2 percent, (or 50,000 km), closer to earth than when it is at its farthest point, termed “Apogee”.

This year, the moon will be at Perigee at 11:34 p.m.,  just ONE MINUTE after the moment when the moon is the fullest.  This should make for an amazing viewing experience of earth’s only significant satellite. Read more of this post
