If You Love SportsCenter, You Will Love This

SportsCenter has changed the way sports are covered and it has given the average fan incredible access to their favorite’s teams and their players.

However, if there is one thing that I absolutely love about SportsCenter, it is their “This is SportsCenter” commercials. Read more of this post

College Football National Signing Day

College Football National Signing Day 2012

As many college football fans know, today was the day for top high school prospects to sign their letter of intent to the college of their choice.

It is an exciting day for the players and the fans of these college programs.

You get to see which top athletes are coming to your school and bringing hopeful fame to your football program.

However, I have one big problem with this day.

Am I the only one who thinks it is absolutely ridiculous that these kids are treated like rock stars about their decision?

On ESPNU, it was literally on all day. Televising high school athletes committing to a college? I find this so stupid. Don’t get me wrong, I’m happy for the player, their families, the fans, and the football programs for getting their guy, but all this media coverage being given to these young athletes who have done NOTHING of importance on the Division I or NFL level is a waste of time and it corrupts the athletes.

All this media coverage to an 18-year-old?

Everyone in the school throws a pep rally for the top athlete as if he is a GOD. Calm down. The guy plays a sport really well; he’s not raising people from the dead.

What about the kids with the 4.0 GPA’s going to study medicine?

Where is their pep rally?

Maybe if ESPN was not covering these kids from their junior/senior year of high school we could have more maturity in our athletes and a better grasp of what is important in our society.

I love football. I am true believer in the game and its impact on people’s lives. That being said, covering these kids from their junior/senior year in HIGH SCHOOL is just stupid. Anyone can be great in high school. You can draw my attention when I see you tearing it up on the college or pro level.

It is embarrassing to see how much media coverage is given to this and how the media makes these 18 year olds feel like pro athletes.

YOU ARE NOT PROFESSIONALS, YOU ARE ACTUALLY JUST GETTING INTO COLLEGE.

Let’s try to  keep things in perspective.

I am happy for everyone involved in this day; there is just way too much coverage being given to it.

JUST PLAY FOOTBALL.

Peyton Manning is Retiring? According to Who?

Peyton Manning retiring

Is Peyton Manning retiring?

After all of the talk about where he will end up in 2012, Peyton Manning is going to retire?

Who exactly said that Peyton Manning will retire?

American Actor Rob Lowe.

He recently tweeted: “Hearing my fave, #18 Peyton Manning will not return to #NFL. Wow. #Colts.”

How would Rob Lowe have this information before any RELEVANT NFL SOURCES?

The only guess is that he got this information straight from Peyton manning, or he is completely making it up. Rob Lowe has been seen on the sidelines of multiple Indianapolis Colts games because he was invited by Peyton Manning himself. They are supposedly good friends and keep in touch often. Colts owner Jim Irsay also seems to be in contact with Rob Lowe occasionally on Twitter.

Rob Lowe

American actor Rob Lowe said that Peyton Manning will retire

According to ESPN’s Chris Mortensen, Archie Manning said this is false. Mortensen’s twitter reads: “Archie Manning laughed when he heard @RobLowe said Peyton will retire, “Noooo…he ain’t retiring. I think he would’ve told me.”

So let’s forget what the source is for this breaking news and who is saying what, and let’s think logically.

Does Peyton Manning retiring actually make sense?

For a Colt fan, it  doesn’t make sense at all. Peyton Manning is the savior of Indianapolis (since Reggie Miller retired) and he wouldn’t just get up and leave his loyal fans like that.

Although, for Peyton Manning, retiring might make a lot of sense. Neck injuries are very serious, especially after having multiple surgeries on it. Even more serious is nerve damage, which Manning has in his neck. I’m sure the word “Paralyzed” has crossed Peyton Manning’s mind a lot these past couple of years.

I know, Peyton Manning rarely gets sacked or hit hard because he gives himself up, but one nice hit can do it. This risk is no longer worth it for Manning considering his own life, and now his twin children.

On March 31st of last year, Peyton Manning and wife Ashley welcomed their son Marshall Williams, and daughter Mosley Thomson into the world. Now that he is a father, I am sure retiring has crossed his mind a lot. Peyton Manning wants to raise his children and also wants his children to have a strong father figure. Taking these stupid risks of potential life threatening injuries can easily leave his children without this. I’m sure one of Peyton’s dreams is to train his son to become an amazing football player (and I can’t wait to see it).

Peyton Manning and his wife

Peyton Manning and Wife Ashley Manning are parents of twins

If I had to guess, I would say the Manning family is in good shape financially and their children are set for life. At this point, it’s not about money, it is simply about how much this guy loves the game and his team.

I’m sure everyone sees how much Peyton Manning loves football, but every good thing has to come to an end at some point.

In my opinion, I don’t see him leaving the NFL at all. He has the perfect personality and talent to become a Head Coach, Offensive Coordinator or even NFL Analyst.

Now it is Eli’s time to come out from behind Peyton and show the world that he is an Elite Quarterback. If Peyton Manning retires or not, he will be remembered as one of the best quarterbacks to ever play.

So for Rob Lowe, whether he heard this news in WAYNE’S WORLD or took Austin Powers Time Machine to the future, we won’t know the truth until the words come out of Peyton Manning’s mouth.

Football: It’s More Than Just A Game

footall players walking towards football.

A team becomes a family

I consider myself a football fanatic.

I love the Jets, but I love the game of football and it’s impact on people.

Any one that has played high school football or loves the game of football understands my point of view here. I’m sure many of you have watched ESPN Films: Boys Of Fall.

If you haven’t, it is a MUST SEE for anyone that has played high school football or truly loves the game of football and its impact on people’s lives.

This film brought me to tears thinking of the good times and great friendships I have built through football. It truly is a brotherhood and for the people who never played or quit, you missed out.

To this day I speak to former teammates and we  reminisce about our time playing high school football at Holy Cross High School.

I love all of them; it is like an extended family that I am so proud to be a part of.  Every time I see one of my teammates, high school football comes up and we’ll talk for hours about it. It seems the stories only get better as time passes by.

Football completely changed my life and the way I handle adversity in my life.

I owe it all to the game of football. Not only is football a great team sport but it taught how life is the ultimate team sport.

High school football is the purist form of football in my opinion. There is no recruitment, it is the kids that are in your age group that just happen to go to the same high school as you.

However, in the NFL there are glimpses of pure football. For example:

Vernon Davis cries on his coaches shoulder

Vernon Davis, You Are The Man

This past weekend, Vernon Davis caught the game winning touchdown to put the 49ers into the NFC Championship game. Once he scored, he literally ran off the field crying.

At one point Vernon Davis was considered a first round bust and was sent to the showers by Mike Singletary which led to his famous “I Want Winners” speech after the game.

Davis has overcome a lot in his tenure as a Niner, and that catch captured his journey as a player and as a man.

“It just reminded me of all the hard work we have put into this team from the beginning of the season”  – Vernon Davis

That’s what Football is about right there. Putting in work, time, and dedication just to make that ONE play to help put your team over the top. I respect Vernon Davis so much more after that. He showed his heart, his character and his work ethic.

This is why football is the greatest sport on the planet. One play and the emotion from the result of the play showed me everything I need to know about Vernon Davis as a man. His emotion reminded me of how much I love the game and how I wish to still play it.

Now imagine you applying that to your everyday job and your dreams. I look back to my high school years to not only see how far I have come as a man, but to make sure my work ethic, dedication and mental toughness are still in check.

Football has taught me that through preparation and dedication you will accomplish anything you set your mind to. You can not only gain success for yourself through the values of football, but the impact you can make on other people is unlimited.

Nobody does that better in today’s game than Tim Tebow. Tebow may not be the most talented player but he is without a doubt the most genuine. All Tebow does is play his heart out and use football as a platform to help other people’s lives.

Read more about Tim Tebow and his impact on other people here.

Through football I have:

- Learned mental toughness and how to handle adversity in my life

- Made friendships and memories that will last a lifetime

- Been inspired to become a better person and leader in my own life.

Football team puts their hands together in a huddle

Together Everyone Achieves More

Football is truly more than just a game. It is an attitude to apply to your own life that can not only benefit yourself, but also the people around you. If everyone played football on an organized team, we would not have as many selfish people around. Once people begin to realize it is not all about themselves, than we can truly grow as a society.
