Is The Proposed Minimum Wage Increase Good or Bad For The American Economy?

During the Presidential State of the Union address, President Obama spoke about raising the minimum wage to $9.00 an hour. Specifically he said “No one who works full-time, should have to live in poverty.” When its put like that, its pretty hard to disagree with, how could anyone disagree with that? Well, those people are called Republicans. When it comes to proposing an increase to the minimum wage, their trepidations aren’t exactly unfounded and wrong. There are legitimate reasons why an increase to the minimum wage, especially in this economy, is a bad idea. Read more of this post

The Final Word on Guns For 2012

2012 gun control laws

The subject of heated debate.

Going into 2013, its interesting to reflect back at this past year. A year in which the theme was curiosity, exploration, and advancement, a glaring tarnish must be discussed. With all of the good things that happened in 2012, what cannot be overlooked is how guns and gun violence have left their permanent stamp on this year. Read more of this post

Should Hate Speech Be Free Speech?

Let me answer that question right now, there is no reason for the freedom of speech to be infringed upon. I don’t care what it is, I will never disagree, that the rights outlined in the first Amendment of the Constitution be infringed upon.

I bring this up though, because over the course of the last week I have been seeing a lot of people posting and talking about the Westboro Baptist Church. If you don’t know who or what the Westboro Baptist Church is by now, they are a fringe, radical group of religious protestors who picket the funerals of dead soldiers, AIDS victims, celebrities, and other high-profile funerals. They have been known, and gained a lot of notoriety by picketing the funerals of dead soldiers holding up signs that say “God Hates Fags”, “Thank God for Dead Soldiers”, “Thank God You Are Dead”, “Thank God For 9/11”, and a whole bunch of other signs that get your blood boiling.

Though recently they seem to have stepped up their hate game and brought it to a whole new level by protesting the funerals of the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting victims. Holding up signs that say “God Sent The Shooter”. This is undoubtedly the most heinous thing I have ever heard or seen in my life. What bothers me more, is that now I have to defend them. Children being escorted away from the crime scene

Well I am sure everyone knows by now that there was a horrific massacre in Connecticut yesterday. Twenty children were killed, some as young as kindergarten and none older than fourth grade, along with six adults, and the murderer himself. This is an unspeakable tragedy only made worse because of the ages of the victims. A total of twenty-seven people were killed for as far as I am concerned, no reason at all. As of now, no one knows why the killer went on a rampage at an elementary school. He killed his mother first, and then headed towards the school, so as of now the massacre is completely unexplainable. Read more of this post

An Atheist Defense of Christmas

A War on Christmas?

Recently there has been a lot of news coverage about a “War on Christmas”. This is nothing new, there has always seemed to be some sort of non-existent war going on between Theists and Atheists. I am openly an atheist, but I still get excited about this time of year. It really is a great time of the year, everything changes for the better. Think about how much the winter would suck if we didn’t have the holidays to look forward to. There just seems to be a different type of excitement this time of year that is inexplicable. What is The Fiscal Cliff? Is it The End of The American Economy?

Without meaning to sound like an economics or political science professor, we first need to discuss what the Fiscal Cliff is. Many people think that the fiscal cliff is an approaching economic disaster of some sort that has to do with America’s debt and economic policy. That statement isn’t exactly false but the fact still remains the Fiscal Cliff is something entirely different. Read more of this post

Happy Birthday Carl Sagan

Carl Sagan is a personal hero of mine. He is considered by many to be the grandfather of promoting science literacy to the masses. He was an inspiration and mentor to many of the scientists today who have taken up his mantle of promoting science literacy to the world. Scientists like Brian Cox, Michio Kaku and Neil deGrasse Tyson. Dr. Tyson later next year will be re-launching Carl Sagan’s famous series “Cosmos” adding a more modern twist along with his own personal touches. Read more of this post

The Freedom of Reason

A few weeks back I told a story about losing my faith and how I came to terms with it. What I didn’t really discuss is how freeing and more beautiful the world is. I mentioned it, but there really is an immense amount of freedom in using logic and reason. Not that people of faith are incapable of using logic and reason, but if you are capable of applying logic and reason to the universe and at least attempt to understand how it all works, everything becomes more beautiful and precious. Why I Still Think Mitt Romney is Going to Lose This Election

Way back in July, I came to the conclusion that Mitt Romney was going to lose this election.

When I came to that conclusion he still had not picked a vice presidential candidate and he was still pretty far behind in the polls. At the end of August I published a re-post that included Paul Ryan’s selection which only reinforced my main point. Read more of this post

Iron Man 3 Trailer: Two Words, “Holy S#@%”

This morning the newest Iron Man 3 Trailer was released and it basically it set all social mediums on fire with excitement. If the trailer is any indicator of how awesome this movie is going to be, it looks like Iron Man 3 is going to be the best one of the “Avenger” series of movies, including Iron Man 1&2. I could be over reacting, you be the judge. Read more of this post

Debate Expectations: Round Two

So needless to say since the last debate there has been a lot of speculation as to who won the first debate between the President and Governor Romney, as well as the debate between Joe Biden and Paul Ryan. Most of if not all people can agree that the last two debates where some of the most exciting debates we have seen in about twenty years. Read more of this post
