The Flow of Consciousness

One of the most important aspects to living a positive enriching life is to achieve a balanced state of flow of consciousness.

One of the most important aspects of living a positive enriching life is to achieve a state of flow. A state of flow entails that you are completely immersed in your craft and task at hand. Regardless of what you are passionate about in life, achieving a balanced state of flow is crucial for achieving long-term success.

What is the flow state?

consciousnessThe flow state is the optimal state for maximizing your brain power into your desired craft. For example, my passions in life include (but are not limited to) writing, art, athletics, and poker. When I sit down to write, I put on my favorite music and zone into the topic I want to discuss. When in the flow, there is nothing else on my mind except the task at hand, creating a dynamic where I am fully focused on creating valuable material to share with everyone. When playing sports, my focus is completely on the competition and what I need to do at every moment to help my team succeed and win. When playing poker, I like to slip into a trance where my mind is buzzing with strictly poker information and how to use that information to beat my opponents.

How do we achieve the flow state?

Achieving a state of flow is pretty easy if you are interested and truly passionate at what you are doing. You will need to rid your mind of every outside distraction that could negatively affect the outcome of your work. The ability to free the mind can only be achieved in your spare time, with meditative type practices and routines. When faced with an objective or goal, your mind will be able to reach an inner focus or “zone” that will be impossible to infiltrate from outside influence. The ability to be present in the moment is crucial for success. Many of us dwell too much on the past and the future when we should be focused on the NOW. The NOW is all we have. The past and future are mere illusions, a man-made concept of time.

When your mind is focused on the past or future, you are wasting valuable mental resources required to achieve the optimal state of creativity in the present moment. We can set aside time to reflect on the past, learn from our mistakes, and plan for the future. Dealing with past emotional issues and future concerns have no place in the state of optimal flow. Save time for reflection to deal with your emotional state, it is important to have your emotions in check when under pressure in competition.

Competition

As I have discussed in previous articles, I find myself at times desperate for competition. I need it like I need air. If I am not competing, I feel empty because I am not working and developing my skills. Competition gives me the opportunity to evaluate where I stand in terms of skill and ability. I know that there is someone else in this world right now working harder than I am. I know that there is someone out there who can beat me in poker, and I know there is someone out there who can beat me with a fastball. I want to beat them as much as they want to beat me.

While some of us are born with innate talents, the rest of us must force ourselves to practice our crafts in order to master them. Even the individuals with gifted talent must practice and train to stay ahead of the curve. There is an infinite amount of resources available to everyone (the internet) to digest and learn from. Studying and applying your studies to your craft will ultimately improve your results. It is important not to be results oriented, as the results will not always be what you desire. Understanding why the results are what they are is the objective.

Never Settle

chakras consciousnessBeing satisfied with a good result is nice, but there is always room for improvement. For example, if I win a pot in poker, my immediate reaction would be to be happy. It is nice to win, but did I win as much as I could? Could I have played the hand differently to win more money? Did I get lucky and think I am good? What adjustments has my opponent made? What adjustments do I need to make?

These questions are not always easy to answer, but that is the point. If you want to improve and “master” your craft, you must constantly evaluate and question yourself. If you think you are good enough, you are setting yourself up to fail. If your ego gets in the way, it can result in negative consequences in the future.

The Flow of Consciousness

Everything you do and achieve in your life is a result of your consciousness. You consciously choose which directions and actions to take, sometimes good, sometimes bad. Becoming consciously aware of why you are making certain decisions is vital for your self-development. A flaw that I notice in a lot of people is that they normally operate in an unconscious state, unaware of why they are taking certain actions. This unconscious state is the result of programming of the subconcsious mind, a powerful tool or your worst enemy depending how you utilize it. 90% of our brain activity is done at an unconscious level. You will need to consciously install enriching positive beliefs and habits into your subconscious if you want to experience long-term success in your field.

When all is said and done, you create your own reality, not anybody else. Others may have influence over your life, positive or negative, but at the end of the day it is you who makes the final decisions. If we surround ourselves with positive uplifting people each day, we in turn will mirror their energy and create a positive enriching state for ourselves. If we are surrounded by energy vampires all day, we will have trouble maximizing our true potential.

It is up to us to consciously determine what we want to experience, and who we want to experience it with. You owe nothing to anyone except yourself. When you treat yourself with respect, others will do the same. If you constantly get down on yourself, guess what? So will everyone else.

Evaluate and reflect on both the positives and negatives in your life, and consciously put in the time to work on removing the negative aspects as best as possible. A flow of positivity will allow you to live a comfortable, enriching, and rewarding life that you can help others enjoy as well. Don’t be selfish with your knowledge, be open to teaching and exploring ideas with those around you. You may just learn something new about yourself. 🙂
