Habits can aid you in achieving the most amazing things. Things that may be seen as, after looking back on them, as miracles. Are they miracles? Maybe to some. Is there magic involved? More psychology and physiology,  but yes. Can you change your life right now by changing one thing you are doing? Yes!

Let me show you how…

good habits bad habitsAs human beings, we are who we are because of the habits we have acquired over time from different sources. From the age 0-6 we had, what scientists call, the “learning mind”. This means that everything in our exterior world was being learned by our mind, ultimately our subconscious. During this time, we pick up nuances, habits, and behaviors from our family, parents, and interactions with other human beings. We have been labeled the “leaning species”. In other words, we learn by learning from others. We see someone doing something that we’d like to do, then we ask them to teach us. In this sense, you’d think that we’d be able to do anything we see others doing. But, is this true?

“7 Habits of Highly Effective People” author Stephen Covey talks about habits for successful people.

Man is a creature of habit. If the habits we have learned are good and beneficial, they help us to make progress toward, and achieve higher states of living. When habits are bad habits or negative in result, they hold us down and prevent us from attaining our ultimate potential. When the business you are running is failing, the first places to look to remedy the issues are the habits of your work. When you start a business with poor business habits, the chances that it will survival are very slim. Why? Because when we repeat excellence is a habitactions(habits)they give us the same results — over and over and over and over and over. There is good news!: Since all habits are acquired or attained from repeat simulation, we all have the power to change our habits by deliberately, and consciously, making one step at a time towards awareness of our own destructive behavior. Because, if our habits aren’t yielding positive results in some way, they have but no other option but to be destructive or negative.

There are three essential steps to changing a habit:

  1. Pick ONE Habit at a time: Decide which habit will get you the furthest if you were to change it to its beneficial equivalent.
  2. Awareness: Make a mental note to yourself that you are going to become aware in the moment of the old habit when it occurs, changing it to it’s beneficial equivalent.
  3. Consistency: This is arguably the most important. When you make a regular effort to becoming aware of the changing of your habit, you deeply ingrain this behavioral change. Eventually, the new beneficial habit will ancor itself as a part of who you are.

Key Points to Note:

  • Only Pick One at a Time: Minimun time spent on the change: 21 Days (PsychologyToday)
  • Replacement: Each negative habit must be replaced with its equivalent positive habit. Habits are a form of energy that moves in a direction that causes you to take action. If you strip that away without something to take it’s place, the your old negative habit will snap back into place to fill the void. If you want positive change, install positive habits in the place of negative ones.
  • Make sure you stay as aware as possible. Invision you habit as a thief looking to capture you mind. Look out for him, and stay on-guard. Eventually, he will leave, becoming no longer interested in being part of your life.

“We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act, but a habit.”
Aristotle

The Magnet Effect:

As stated previously, habits are a type of moving energy. Have you ever been in the car around lunch time starting to get hungry, only to notice the McDonald’s right around the corner? You pull in, order a meal, drive off, and continue on your way. Later, you realize that the lunch you had is starting to make you feel uneasy. You say to yourself, “Why did I do that again? I know there are better options!” It is likely that you made an unconscious decision to get lunch from a place that you know is bad because of habit. If you hadn’t gone there, you might have tried another fast food place, telling yourself that “This place is healthier”. However, the results are the same, an uneasy feeling.  What has happened isn’t your fault, but not doing anything to change it is. You are, what seems like, naturally pulled towards a direction that you don’t want to go. This can be blamed on many things: The establishment, convenience, price, and so on. But if you notice, none of those things have anything to do with you. When we take responsibility for our actions, we are empowered to change them. The key is using this same force to our advantage.

The Final Key:

When you make the decision to local a habit you want to change, find it’s beneficial equivalent habit, become aware of the thief( bad habit), we start to notice that we are being pulled into directions that enable us to achieve our higher potential. When we change our strongest habits to habits that will benefit us(think of your strongest pulling habit, one you think you have no control over), that same energy pull that we experience with the bad habit is applied to our new beneficial habit. The momentum factor takes this one step further in describing that when this process is started, we build RPM(like a car)and the process gets faster and easier the longer we participate. This creates a magical magnet, through your fresh habits, that pulls you towards exactly what you want.

Take ONE habit, ONE action, to create ONE amazing life! 🙂
