Edgar Dean Mitchell was selected by NASA to be an Astronaut in 1966. His first position was as a backup lunar-module pilot on the Apollo 10 mission – but he literally soon found himself on another planet!
What Mitchell didn’t anticipate was a 3 day return trip that triggered something even more powerful. The spinning spacecraft provided constant panoramic views every 2 minutes which – after just walking on a Martian surface – engulfed the astronaut in a “powerful, powerful experience.”
“What I experienced during that three-day trip home was nothing short of an overwhelming sense of universal connectedness. I actually felt what has been described as an ecstasy of unity…. I perceived the universe as in some way conscious. The thought was so large it seemed inexpressible, and to a large degree it still is.”
“It was all there suspended in the cosmos on that fragile little sphere. What I experienced was a grand epiphany accompanied by exhilaration…From that moment on, my life would take a radically different course.”
“I realized that the molecules of my body and my partners, and the molecules of the spacecraft were prototyped in some ancient generation of stars. And suddenly, instead of being an intellectual experience, it was an emotional experience, followed with an ecstasy!”
“So my question was: Wow! What kind of a brain/body is this that causes this sort of experience?”
Edgar returned home to Earth and began to look for answers in literature. This eventually lead him to readings considered “Mystical” in nature where he found information he best related too after his experience.
“What you are perceiving is information, and giving meaning to that information is what the conscious being is all about. It made me realize that in asking ourselves the deep questions, who are we, how did we get here, and where are we going, which every generation needs to ask, we probably needed to look at it from a new perspective now that we are a space-faring civilization.”
“There wasn’t anything in the scientific literature about this, so I began asking the question, what am I going to do about this? That’s the reason I started the Institute of Noetic Sciences.”
The word “noetic” comes from the ancient Greek word noetikos. It refers to inner knowing: a kind of intuitive consciousness that provides direct and immediate access to knowledge from beyond our normal senses and rational thinking.
The founding of this Institute was an incumbent mission and goal that Edgar decided on after his life-changing experience. In his words the creation was “To broaden the knowledge of the nature and potentials of mind and consciousness ——– to apply that knowledge to the enhancement of human well-being and the quality of life on the planet.”
Today a large Noetic community fulfills Mitchell’s visionary mission through frontier research, transformational learning programs, and over 30,000 members.
IONS conducts and sponsors leading-edge research into the potentials and powers of consciousness that includes perception, belief, attention, intention, and intuition- while still maintaining scientific rigor.
