The Ultimate Zombie Apocalypse Survival Guide

A couple of our writers and contributors at like to call themselves “zombie experts” because of their experience in the field of slaying zombies.

Their resumes consist of playing Call of Duty: Nazi Zombies, Resident Evil, Silent Hill and House of the Dead for a majority of their childhood.

George A. Romero created the “zombie” and showed us what can happen if a zombie apocalypse does break out with his series of Night of the Living Dead, Dawn of the Dead and Day of the Dead. The hit series The Walking Dead also gives us a good idea on how a group of people can possible survive a zombie outbreak.

Could it actually happen?

After all of the strange “zombie-like” occurrences in Florida this past month, some people might actually start to question if a zombie apocalypse can really happen.

What if all of these movies, shows and games were all purposely made by the government because they knew that a zombie-like virus would spread one day? What if they were preparing us for a War against zombies?

A little far fetched, but anything can happen, right?

George A. Romero would go down as the smartest guy to ever walk the planet, or..God.

Now that we have proven to be a credible source for zombie survival, lets get started.

Zombie Apocalypse Survival Guide

So lets say the guy who decided to eat the other guys face off turned out to be carrying a zombie-like virus and it started spreading all over the state of Florida. All of these rashes and viruses spreading in schools and airports of Florida were the result of this deadly zombie chemical. The insane doctor that went crazy in the back seat of the cop car was in fact slowly turning into a zombie.

One morning you wake up to a panicking news reporter on the television:

” Good Morning, we interrupt this program to inform you with this important news bulletin. We are receiving unconfirmed reports right now of severely gruesome acts of violence and mass murder all over the cities of Miami, Jacksonville, Atlanta and Charlotte. There seems to be some sort of mind altering virus or chemical spill that is turning our people into psychotic animals. Oh my god.. we just have received multiple reports from cities now on the west coast of people eating other people.”

Your television quickly switches to the president of the United States as he urges everyone to stay in their homes and lock themselves in. He explains how the highways are packed with cars trying to leave the cities, and there is no where to go.

This is when you have to start making quick life or death decisions.

Zombie Outbreak

Who to Call?

We’ll lets say you have time to contact all of the people that are most important in your life and you would really like to take them on your journey of survival.

Obviously you want to save all of your loved ones, but this is where you make your first mistake. Everyone wants to be a hero and save everyone, but chances are this will slow you down.

Grab your immediate family and take charge. Try and string together a group of people that you know will make an impact against these maniacs. Those people will bring their immediate family too, and hopefully their cars as well.

Now you have a team of (5-10) strong and intelligent people that will help lead the way.

Identify the person in charge ASAP

Like any successful civilization, there is a strong leader that makes decisions. When making all of these quick decisions in the beginning, you have to remember one thing.

The human race is being threatened. People are going crazy, and there is no more control.

For your group to stay calm and safe as possible, you will need one mentally and physically strong leader. If you are a fan of The Walking Dead, you see how Rick takes charge of his group and makes the decisions. Right now, they are all still alive so a good leader is probably a good idea.

Where to go?

This is the most important decision.

Some people may feel safest in their boarded up home, but how can this be safe at all?

Eventually you will run out of food and supplies and people will have to make trips. Your main concern is to find a secure place with the best shelter and a large supply of food. There is no point in leaving the city because you will just end up in another city with the same problem.

Take your group to a mall, a Target, or any kind of large complex that has plenty of food and a variety of supplies.

My favorite choice is a mall (Thank you George Romero) because of its variety of supplies.

A mall offers:

  • Food Courts
  • Vending Machines
  • Vitamin stores
  • Clothing stores
  • Sports stores (possible weapons and tools)
  • Gun Stores
  • Pharmacy
  • Stock rooms with more food and supplies
  • Refrigerated areas, stoves and home appliances
  • Gated off areas

There is a good chance that other people had the same idea and are occupying the mall as well. This is when the strength of your group is tested. Take charge and protect your group. Remember, there is no more order, no more laws and no more authority. Become the authority and take control.

Do what you have to do.

Zombie Mall ApocalypseKeep the zombies out!

This is the one flaw of a shopping mall.

There are so many ways in and out, and there is a lot of ground to protect. Start by boarding off the outer perimeter. Use anything that you can find.

Every store has gates that you can pull down, and the main entrances usually consist of double doors, or rotating doors that have strong locks and pull down gates.

Make sure EVERYTHING is locked and gated off, and then board it even more.

Have look-outs that take shifts on and off at all entrances. It would be nice for them to have guns (if the mall provides), but any kind of weapon is better than none. There should be a sniper or look-out on the roof with either a rifle or a pair of binoculars. They can keep track of what is going  on outside.

What happens next?

What happens next is up to you and your team.

The mall is not going to last forever and further plans need to be made fast.

Make the supplies last for as long as possible, do anything that needs to be done to keep your group safe, and blow off some zombie heads!

Please feel free to leave a comment on some of your zombie survival ideas!

If everyone else can be absurd, so can I. George Romero didn’t create the zombie, he created the modern, popular concept of the zombie as we now know it.

And, I have to say it, because it keeps coming up on zombie sites. 28 Days Later is NOT a zombie movie any more than The Crazies is a zombie movie and nobody ever claims that The Crazies is a zombie movie.

Remember there are 6 billion people in the world. Once a zombie bites you, you become one. As long there are people around, no matter how many zombies you kill chances are there will always be another one to replace them.

Playing video games makes one an expert? I’m sure you experts understand that the winning scenarios were written by other people with as little experience as the rest of us. By playing the game you succeed not by doing what would be effective in real life, but by doing what the designers of the game(s) wrote as the successful scenario. That’s all.
Let’s look at it logically, shall we?
First of all, like you said: The rules are out the window. (paraphrased) This obviously includes the rules of biology and physics, otherwise there would be no living dead. Would there? So there is no guarantee the bodies would rot. Or that their rotting would stop them. We could have a bunch of skeletons running around killing after a while. Or by consuming living flesh they can somehow regenerate in a facsimile of a living healthy body. Or that they are embued with some kind of supernatural power that resists rotting. We just cannot know.
Anyways, it only takes one to kill you. And then you are a zombie also. Fresh. So as long as there are people, there will be new, fresh, unrotted zombies wandering around. And… it only takes one to make another one out of you.
What we do know is that they are at most walking around in human bodies. So we can effectively plan for some kind of defense in the form of a physical barrier. We are generally assured that trauma to the Central Nervous System can harm them or stop them in some manner of “death”.
Fortunately, these skills and technologies have been around for millennium. We need a wall, a castle, a moat, an island, an armed force that knows how to do more than pull a trigger. A secondary force that knows how to make bows and arrows and swords and armor without electricity or modern machines. We need another group that knows enough about agriculture and animal husbandry to provide food for everyone.
Cities will be death traps. Freeways and roads between metropolitan areas will be death zones. Success will go to the ones who get out of the cities first.
And if its good to have a strong leader in our group, and I agree it may be, then what happens when two groups meet? The character of the leaders in question will determine how it goes. There may be an alliance or a fight. This will be repeated over and over as groups meet and merge. Even after a fight, the survivors will join up with the winning group. Groups will grow over time.
The human race will have to adapt to a new paradigm: The world + zombies.

Of course, if the zombies are fast and smart and can climb and reason, etc. We’re probably just screwed. We are all assuming that they will be the shuffling brain “dead” (sorry, couldn’t resist) types we are familiar with from media sources like movies and TV.

Romero did not invent the zombie. Look up Wade Davis on wiki. In the African dialect where the word zombie comes from, it just means “soul”.

So overall, it makes a lot of logic that in the initial weeks of the zombie apocalypse smaller groups would survive. You mentioned the show: The Walking Dead? that group was made up of smaller groups, one’s that banded together for survival. The next season: They met another large(ish) group on a farm and joined up with it (in a manner that depended on the character of the two leaders). How did the season end? With the hint that they were about to meet with an even larger group that seemed to have a rather “dark” character.

Like my sociology professor used to say: Put any 7 people together and they will reinvent discrimination.

Overall, it will be a new world and a new paradigm and the ones who are flexible of thought and unafraid of living in the face of major change will survive. The rest will commit suicide or just give up. It’s like that earthquake a few years back in Alaska. It lasted 12 minutes. That is a loooooong time for an earthquake, for the ground to shake and things to fall.
And I am sure after about 5 minutes there were some people who said: “Oh well, this is just how life will be from now on. Might as well get dressed and go to work.”

Sometimes the “Majority” just means all the idiots are on the same side.

i would bunker down. zombies are dead. that means the body decays. muscles wither and bones weaken. the flesh is falling apart and soon they will be falling apart at the seems. and it doesnt take that long either. have enough for a about 5 months and by then (even if the undead is still alive some how) they are so decayed that they cant move their bodys. or atleast drasticly slowed by the lack of muscle to move the body. it wont take a year for a zombie to be so incredibly decayed that it can no longer move. nobody takes this into acount. the living dead were HUMAN and have the same bodys as us. after death all organs shut down. new cells are no longer being produced. what holds in our organs? skin. we shed our skin extreamly fast. but thats ok with the rate of production of skin cells. when the body dies it no longer produces skin cells and that means with all the skin your losing and the fact that you are no longer making more the skin that holds us together is gone quickly. even if they become alive again zombies only have basic motor functions AND the need to feed. you can out live the zombies. even though it make take a while with the number of ass holes trying to hunt zombies down a LOT are bound to be infected thus dragging out the process of infection and making it more likely to last longer due to more and more infection. the point is after about 2 years the infection will be gone if everyone just avoided the zombies and bunkered down. i know food and all that shit is a problem and of course you will need to go stock up every now and then but after the zombies die off is the fun part. then its surviving after that in a post apoctolyptic world that is the problem.

    • breakinbadd says:

      Great point !!

In a perfectly realistic world, these zombies would decay because of the points that you bring up. Everyones ideas are good ones because we don’t know what exactly we would be dealing with and what kind of flesh eating monsters would be walking the earth.

      Only time will tell…; )

  6. Captian Obvious says:

No, the huge flaw with the shopping mall is the one thing a shopping mall is SUPPOSED to do. Attract crowds. Large areas teeming with supplies are massive bait to survivors, other survivors who may not be as careful, quiet, or civilized. Guess what, now you have a nice big swarm following a smaller group of possible hostile survivors. That is if you manage to even get there. Shopping malls tend to be near large populations. Zombie apocalypse= large population of INFECTED. You should do the EXACT OPPOSITE of this guide, stock up early and keep enough food and defense supplies to bunker down in your house long enough for the initial panic to wear off. Let the weakest get their faces eaten off and the mania subside so you can get a better grasp of who/what is around you and where your best choices are for supplies.

    • breakinbadd says:

Yes this can work as well, but you do not know when the attacks will subside. It can be weeks, months, years or forever. you can stock up as much as you want and board up your house and let time pass, but you don’t know for sure what you are dealing with.

I believe the mall is a good idea IF you have the right team to take charge and keep it safe. staying home is not the smartest idea in my opinion. If you are smart enough and strong enough, you will be able to take over a mall (or mini mall) and have all the supplies and food you need.

  7. Taylor says:

i think the mall may be a little hard if you live in a city lot’s of people will be there lot’s of guns lots of every thing try and pack up before you leave you’re house food, drink, weapons anything that cxan keep you safe and full

  8. Michel says:

You forgot to mention that you have to arm yourself! You can’t go running around zombies unarmed! A baseball bat will do and remember to aim for the head!
