Golfing and/or Drinking for Developmental Disabilities!
May 1, 2012 8 Comments
If you are a loyal reader of zazenlife.com, then you are probably aware that I am the father of 2 boys on the autistic spectrum. I won’t subject you to a long, drawn out story about how difficult and expensive it is to provide and care for 2 special needs children. The purpose of this post is to make everyone aware of an event happening this Friday, May 4th.
The Northeast Queens Lions Club is holding a golf outing at Clearview Park Golf Course in Bayside, Queens. This event is a fundraiser to benefit the Fineson’s Hillside Campus of the NYS Office of Mental Retardation & Developmental Disabilities. The campus is named after Bernard Fineson, a fellow parent of a child with developmental disabilities. When his child was born, there were no community based services available to help care for him. Mr. Fineson joined a small group of parents and educators who wanted to change the service delivery system. Throughout his life, he worked to reshape the legal and moral framework for the modern day service system. As an attorney, he worked closely with federal and state lawmakers to draft legislation to ensure that individuals with developmental disabilities had ample opportunities available to them. He later served as one of the founders of the NYC chapter of the AHRC as well as President of the National Association for Retarded Children. The proceeds from this event will give the clients of the Fineson Campus another day to look forward to.
The event is scheduled to kick off with a 12:30PM check-in, with a tee-off of 1:30. Awards and prizes will be given for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place, closest to the pin, long drive, and a $10,000 prize for a hole in one! Non-golfers will have a shot at prizes, too, as there will be raffles and other giveaways as well! Golf will be followed by a buffet dinner at 7:30 PM which includes unlimited draft beer and wine! Entry fees for golf are $140 for an individual or $560 for a foursome. Entry fee includes greens fees, cart rental, gift bags, lunch on the turn, and the aforementioned buffet. For more info, please email farmar61@verizon.net with “golf outing” as the subject.
“But I don’t play golf,” you may be saying to yourself. Fear not! The day will also feature yours truly, @phdinweed, behind the bar, starting at 9am. Come by and have breakfast, lunch, snacks, and expertly crafted drinks, with my company thrown in at no additional charge! Drink specials in effect all day, with exclusive specials for zazenlife.com readers! Simply mention zazenlife.com at the bar for a free sticker and the exclusive drink specials!
If you are unable to attend, but still wish to have a positive effect on the day, you can go to PayPal and send a “virtual” tip to phdinweed@gmail.com! It will go directly to the care of my two autistic sons, I assure you. Below, you can find all relevant links for this event. PLEASE SHARE THIS ARTICLE PROFUSELY!

Love the sticker idea. Spaceship is out of fuel I wont be able to make it
Your description makes me wish I lived close enough to attend! Have fun — I’ll see if I can swing a donation through the computer.
Thanks, Judith!
That’s very cool, brother. I am no fan of golf clubs, and way too far away anyway, but I hope you have a very successful event. I can hit up the virtual tip jar with a meager gesture, and surely I won’t be the only one. Have a good day behind the bar and get nice one time for me when you get the chance.
Cheers
Ps I think your PayPal link is broken, but we can still send to phdinweed@gmail.com, correct?
Correct!
Thanks for the heads up about the broken link AND the generous donation!
