Is Spokeo a Threat to Your Privacy?

Yes, Spokeo.com is a huge threat to your privacy because they know everything about you, and they offer all of your information to the rest of the world. The more someone pays, the more personal information they get. Fortunately, I will explain how to get all of your personal information off of this website.

Spokeo
Spokeo is a Social Network Aggregator website that aggregates data from many online and offline sources (such as phone directories, social networks, photo albums, marketing surveys, mailing lists, government censuses, real estate listings, and business websites). After compiling all of this data, the website makes a profile for you without permission.

Personal information is displayed publicly on the website including your address, your images, your Email address and even your income/wealth.

To get a good idea on how dangerous it can be, visit the site here  and simply type in your name or Email.

personal information online

If you tried it out, you probably realized that Spokeo displays your address visually on google maps. I was freaked out too when I looked myself up.

Spokeo was developed by former Stanford student and company CEO Harrison Tang. He unsurprisingly blocked his own personal information from Spokeo searches.

I wonder why.

The website has recently been called “The online yellow pages for stalkers.”

Remove Your Name From Spokeo

So how do you remove yourself from Spokeo.com?

Follow these simple steps:

  1. Go to Spokeo.com and type in your name.
  2. Copy the URL when it brings up your information.
  3. Go to the bottom of the page and click on privacy.
  4.  Paste the URL in the box provided.
  5. Include your email address (it gives you further instructions via email)
  6. Enter the code.
  7. Go to your email and click on the link they provide to you.
  8. Confirm the directory listing has been deleted.
  9. Go back to Spokeo.com and put in your name to be sure it was deleted.

Privacy on the internet has become a growing problem because of sites like this. For some ridiculous reason they are allowed to continue displaying everyone’s personal information, so all we can do is take ourselves off of the their list for now.

  3. There isn’t any box at the bottom of my Spokeo page –what next?

    • Amy Sampels says:

Click on PRIVACY at the bottom of any page. In the Privacy page, scroll down and you will see the boxes that breakinbadd describes.
