Fantasy Baseball With PhDinWeed: Week 1 Recap, Week 2 Forecast
April 9, 2012 Leave a Comment
What an eventful first week in fantasy baseball! Not a great week for closers, as blown saves were the order of the week. Mariano Rivera, Sergio Santos, Jose Valverde and Heath Bell were among the big names to blow saves in the opening week.
Ok, let’s get to my week 1 recap. You may recall in my last article I stated that the short week and uncertainty in pitching rotations made it tough to set a lineup in weekly leagues. Due to this uncertainty, I picked up Jeff Samardzija off of waivers and dropped Ryan Raburn. It was a move I didn’t want to make, but it actually turned out well, as you will see below.
Thursday through Saturday, things weren’t looking so good. My pitchers, namely Corely Leubke, Brandon McCarthy and Sergio Santos, let me down horribly, and on Sunday morning, the final day of the period, I was down by 40 points. I had Jeff Samardzija and my opponent had Clay Buchholz on the mound. I already had made peace with a loss for the week.
But wait! Buchholz got lit up by the Tigers, registering a -2.5 tally for the day. My only thought then was “at least I made it respectable.” Then came Samardzija’s start. He was masterful, going 8.2 innings, striking out 8 and allowing only 1 ER. His start was worth 32.33 points, and put me in the lead heading into the late afternoon. My opponent had Shawn Kemp hit a 2-run HR for him, putting him back into the lead. The nail in the coffin for my opponent occured at about 6pm, and it was a Ryan Roberts HR, which put me in the lead for good (much to the chagrin of the rest of the league). So, after week 1, I am 1-0 and looking good.
My Week 2
I am keeping more or less the same lineup as last week, with the exception of replacing Brennan Boesch with Melky Cabrera in the OF. I am throwing a rotation of Matt Moore, Cole Hamels, Henderson Alvarez, Trevor Cahill, Brandon McCarthy, Cory Leubke, and Craig Kimbrel. I made one roster move, picking up Ryan Vogelsong and stashing him in my DL slot.
Your Week 2
Guy to Grab (offense):
Alex Presley seems to be the real deal in Pittsburgh. A small sample size, to be sure, but his speed could add up to big points and could be a great 4th outfielder with the potential to be more.
Guy to Grab (pitcher)
Mike Pelfrey has 2 starts this week. Mets have some excitement building around them. Take a flyer on him this week. If you have a DL slot, snatch up Ryan Vogelsong.
Sorry this article is bereft of links and pictures. I wanted to get it out ASAP and I had computer problems this morning. Future recaps and articles will be much more in depth.
Good luck this week!
