TSA “Detains” Senator Rand Paul

Rand Paul

Senator Rand Paul, (R)-KY

At 9:59 am on January 23rd, 2012, a spokesperson for Senator Rand Paul tweeted the following message:

“Just got a call from @senrandpaul. He’s currently being detained by TSA in Nashville.”

Shortly thereafter, Congressman (and POTUS candidate) Ron Paul, Rand Paul’s father, tweeted thusly:

“My son Rand is currently being detained by the TSA at the Nashville Airport. I’ll share more details as the situation unfolds.”

The TSA  version of events states  Sen. Rand Paul “was not detained at any point” but “triggered an alarm during routine airport screening and refused to complete the screening process in order to resolve the issue.”

“Passengers, as in this case, who refuse to comply with security procedures are denied access to the secure gate area,” the TSA adds. “He was escorted out of the screening area by local law enforcement.”

“The passenger was screened by millimeter wave imaging technology using automated target recognition,” the TSA continues. “This technology uses the same generic image for all passengers to further protect passengers privacy. When an alarm occurs a yellow box indicates where an anomaly is. A targeted pat down is used to resolve the alarm.”

Rand Paul and his father Ron Paul are both staunch opponents of TSA. Rand Paul has prior interaction with the TSA, blistering TSA director John Pistole with the following quote after a 6-year-old girl from his district was subjected to a full body search:

“I guess this little girl would be part of the random pat-downs, this little girl from Bowling Green, Kentucky, one of my constituents,” Paul said, according to the Lexington Herald-Leader. “They’re still quite unhappy with you guys as well as myself and a lot of other Americans who think you’ve gone overboard, you’re missing the boat on terrorism because you’re doing these invasive searches on six-year-old girls.”

It will be interesting to see how this plays out and whether or not the Senator was detained, as the U.S. Constitution actually protects federal lawmakers from detention while they are en route to the Capital.

“The Senators and Representatives…shall in all Cases, except Treason, Felony and Breach of the Peace, be privileged from Arrest during their Attendance at the Session of their respective Houses, and in going to and returning from the same….” according to Article I, Section 6.

Ok, now that we have gotten the substance of the story out of the way, let me opine:

TSA Detains Rand Paul

A more appropriate logo design for TSA

The TSA is a sinkhole of billions of our tax dollars annually. They are an army of otherwise unemployable slobs who suckle at the federal government’s teat while depriving American citizens of some of their most basic constitutional rights.

They provide security theater, not security. They have not stopped a single terrorist action, and have actually failed any number of “tests” posed to them. They treat the elderly and infirm with less respect than prison guards treat inmates.  It is this author’s hope that Rand Paul will now make it his top priority to reign in, and hopefully end, this affront to the American citizenry.

Godspeed to you, Senator Rand Paul. Please rid us of this Orwellian nightmare.

Update: Around 12:30pm EST, Ron Paul issued the following statement:

“The police state in this country is growing out of control. One of the ultimate embodiments of this is the TSA that gropes and grabs our kids and our seniors and does nothing to keep us safe….my ‘Restore America Plan,’ in additional to cutting $1 trillion dollars in one year, eliminates the TSA.”

“We must restore the freedom and respect for liberty that once made America the greatest nation in human history,” he continued. “I am deeply committed to doing so as president of the United States.”

Hear! Hear! I consider myself very lucky, because I have an implanted defibrillator, and therefore am spared all of the automated crap in favor of an agent with a wand. I’ve never been treated badly by any of these agents, I think because they figure if I’m volunteering for a search, I must not be dangerous. But family and friends, many of them seniors, have been pushed around, addressed very rudely, and forced to go through random (ha, ha) bag checks even though the X-ray shows that they have nothing in the bag. TSA is a waste of time and money, but they’ve also been given a lot of authority, which in the hands of idiots is as dangerous as the terrorists.

As the father of 2 autistic boys, I wouldn’t even THINK of flying. The problem is, TSA is branching out. I encounter them almost daily in Penn Station, and they even have mobile teams that set up random checkpoints on the roads! Police state is no longer an exaggeration.
