John Hagelin: Quantum Spiritualist

John Samuel Hagelin was born on June 9, 1954. At a very young age, he was awarded a scholarship to the “Taft School for Boys”, in light of receiving a perfect score of 165 on a school-administered IQ test. He then went on to earn his undergraduate degree in physics from Dartmouth College on a full-ride scholarship, from which he graduated Summa Cum Laude. During his time at Dartmouth, he also managed to complete the studies needed to become qualified to teach Transcendental Meditation.

After Dartmouth, he finished a Master’s program at Harvard, and then 5 years later received his Ph.D.
After completing his education, he worked at both the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center (SLAC), as well as The European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN), before switching over to the Maharishi International University, where he established a doctoral program in theoretical physics, and continued his research.
Between the years 1979 and 1996, he published more than 70 papers in the fields of particle physics, grand unification, supersymmetry and cosmology, most of which were published in prestigious scientific journals. Of these 70, several were revered by the scientific community at large, and were among the 20 most cited references in physics.
He has also done many experiments in meditation and its effects on the world, including a famous study which he organized, where 4,000 transcendental meditation experts attempted to lower the crime rate in Washington DC. Although many people dismiss this as having too many variables for accurate results, they found that violent crimes for those weeks were around 23 percent lower than average, with rapes down over 55 percent!
He also helped to found the Natural Law Party, and has run for president 3 times.
In light of trying to stay objective here, I will say that latter in his life, he has been met with more and more resistance, and has lost some support. Many tried to convince him out of moving to Maharishi University and focusing more on spirituality and less on scientific data.
More recently, he has been working on bridging the gap between physics and consciousness. His main argument has to do with making a comparison between the Veda’s (an ancient hindu text over 6 thousand years old) understanding of god and consciousness as an experience of unity, and the unified field derived from modern physics.
Here is a great video I found on youtube in which he is asked various questions, and does his best to answer them as simply as possible.
