My Complete Poker Manifesto, Part IV: Starting Your Own Poker Business

Running a successful poker business requires good record keeping.

Part III: A General Overview of Poker

When I was first introduced to poker back in my high school years, I played the game purely for fun. I played exclusively with just friends in live cash games and tournaments.

We would play $5-$20 tournaments on weekends and we weren’t really good players. We took the game seriously, but had no idea what it took to truly win at poker in the long-run.

I never knew that poker was offered online for real money, and I also never thought that within a few years, I would be playing the game for serious amounts of money through running my own poker business.

I gained further interest in poker when I saw online poker games were being  offered through a site called SportsBook.com.

This was a site I would occasionally make some small sports bets on football Sundays during the season for fun.

I would soon read more about online poker and found out that some players were making millions off of some online poker sites.

I wanted in.

I began to get my hands on as much information as possible, and deposited $100 into FullTiltPoker.com in the winter of 2008.

I figured if I lost the $100 I would never play again, so I didn’t intend on losing it.

I knew I would have to take a lot of steps to ensure I didn’t lose my investment. I knew I would have to keep records of my play, study and analyze those records, and practice good proper bankroll management.

I intended on managing my poker bankroll correctly and if I didn’t, I knew my business would be bankrupt before long.

I would go on to amass over $25,000 through Full Tilt in the next 2 years purely because I focused on managing my bankroll correctly. Bankroll management is the most important aspect of your poker business regardless of your skill level.
