Geothermal Energy has become an increasingly important element in today’s world. This type of energy is generated and stored in the Earth.

Its odd source of energy has given it a place in our strange place collection.

One of the largest attractions in Iceland is powered by Geothermal energy.

Blue Lagoon is a  spa located in a lava field in Grindavik on the Reykjanes Peninsula (which rests between two continents as the Euro-Asian and American tectonic plates meet at Blue Lagoon) and it is powered by 100% geothermal energy.

Guests bath and relax in Blue Lagoons geothermal sea water which is known for its positive effects on skin. In some cases, the Blue Lagoon Spa was said to have cured people of various types of skin disease. So this strange place is also a miracle working place.

It has also proven to relieve stress from everyday life. About 400,000 people come to this spa annually because of its positive effects on the body, mind and spirit.

So how exactly does this spa use geothermal energy to power it?

It’s pretty complicated, but learning howthis energy works is essential to our planets future.

First off, steamy waters are part of lava formation, and this large swimming pool is heated with the run-off water from a nearby geothermal power plant.

This super heated water is vented from the ground near a lava flow and is used to run turbines that generate electricity.

After passing through the turbines, the steam and very hot water passes through a heat exchanger to provide heat for a municipal hot water heating system.

This is when the water is fed into the lagoon for users to bath and relax in. The water reaches 104 degrees farenheit, but it is obviously safe for people to swim in. The water is also VERY rich in minerals.

The Blue Lagoon Spa also operates a research and development facility to help find cures for other skin ailments using this mineral rich water.

400,000 people a year swimming in this pool may have you thinking that it might be dirty, but this is not the case at all.

Iceland has a strict code of hygiene, making guests shower without clothing in the communal shower area before and after they use the spa.

A couple of other places in Europe and asia are now using geothermal energy to power places like Blue Lagoon, and it is slowly saving the world.

If you are into spa’s and are also into exploring some of the most amazing places on Earth, many people suggest visiting Blue Lagoon.
