Flush Out: The Wilpons Need to Sell The Team

Sadly, I’m a die hard Mets fan.

Throughout my life, I’ve experienced tons of disappointment from the team and it started to go completely downhill in 2006. I got to witness Carlos Beltran watch a curveball drop in for a strike and the Cardinals go on to the World Series. Things got even better when Fred and Jeff Wilpon got all tied up in the Bernie Madoff ponzi scheme.

The team has now completely gone to hell.

The Wilpons’ have brought in the “moneyball” front office to be the face of the business end of the franchise… and eat shit. Jose Reyes, has walked without an offer. Quality players have walked by without even the thought of throwing money their way.

Listen, if the Mets weren’t in New York, this would be okay. But this is a BIG MARKET town. This is New York City.

If the team is going to try to bring people to the stadium, you need to spend money on superstars. Their current attempt at getting people to Citi, is to have cheaper ticket packages. Why the hell would I drop fifty dollars on five games (a very good deal if I had someone to watch), to witness the worst pitching staff in baseball give up 8 runs a game… and maybe Ike Davis hit a home run and make a great play? The latter would happen ONLY  if I’m lucky. Chances are he’ll be hurt.

My favorite part about this offseason, is the Mets attempt at downplaying their lack of money. They announced their new “throwback-esque” jersey; which is the same jersey, but with no black outlining (the only thing that kind of, sort of, reminded me of my childhood hero, Mike Piazza, and their incredible 1999 and 2000 seasons). They are changing the walls so they’re pulled in a bit more (more homers, yay!), and making them blue.

I guess people will go to Citi to see some fancy new jerseys and shiny blue walls. Maybe. Probably not.

Can I also add that the Wilpons’ are trying to lure people into buying minority shares of the team? Twenty million dollar investment and you get to hang out with Mr. Met (at the stadium only; he can’t come to your son’s bar mitzvah, sorry), a business card, a weekend trip to a road game (of their picking- so you’re probably going to Pittsburgh or Washington, DC), and other perks that you should get for buying season tickets, spending 50 a game on hot dogs and beer,  and maybe an authentic jersey at the stadium; not for spending TWENTY MILLION, and then not getting to have a say.

The Mets need to be saved, and they need to be saved now. Step one: MLB needs to strip the team from Fred and Jeff. Step two: Mark Cuban needs to buy them. Step three: I need to become friends with Mark Cuban, who will then introduce me to Vinny Chase and we’ll all hang out in LA, and live happily ever after.

Look out for my next post on my highlights of 2011, which will include: tv shows, food, music, nyc establishments, vacations, engagements, gadgets, and more. What it will not include: the Mets and my lactose intolerance, because they both suck.

Follow me on twitter! I tweet about a lot of stuff. I promise you may laugh. @fromheretoli
