Depression: The Mental and Physical Roadblock

Clinical depression Is more than just being “down” or those temporary feelings of sadness when we are having a bad day. It is a serious issue in today’s society that affects a person’s mind, body, and overall sense of well-being. It can negatively drive relationships, working, eating, sleeping, physical activities, and just life in general. Depression is not just a dilemma you can turn off like a light switch. It prevents people from enjoying aspects of life that were once pleasurable to them and might make them look at themselves and the world they live in with a negative opinion. Sometimes it takes, days, months, and even years to overcome. Depression affects almost 20 million Americans on a yearly basis and should not be taken lightly. The good news is, there is a light at the end of the tunnel for individuals who are struggling with depression in everyday life. It can be treated.

One of the biggest steps of dealing with depression is overall recognition of it. Sometimes the signs of depression are difficult to point out by the host. Many people believe that they aren’t depressed, but have some type of character flaw or mental weakness. Yes people can have these feelings one time or another in their lives, but this is mostly due to the depressed state they are in.  It is also important to understand that depression doesn’t just affect a single person, but many friends and family members associated. Since depression is so common in our community today, it is important to seek out mental health professionals or physicians that specialize in this area of
expertise.

Symptoms:
Feelings of emptiness and/or anxiety
Lack of energy or increase in fatigue
Insomnia, lack of sleep, too much sleep
Loss of hope, pessimism
Extreme flux in weight whether it is gain or loss of
Thoughts of death or suicide
Irritability, excessive crying, feeling unimportant

This is just to name a few. I think most people can agree that some of these feelings have crossed your path one way or another. But depression can make this a reality for many people everyday. Nobody wants to live a life of blandness and commonality. And you don’t have to. The first step is up to you to recognize that life is not an everyday struggle of trying to find happiness. So how badly do you want these feelings to go away? Because everywhere you turn, look, travel, and frequent, there are answers and people to help you find the beauty and happiness in life, that you may or may not know exists.
