Island Universes

“The martyrs go hand in hand into the arena; they are crucified alone.” We express our feelings through symbols and sounds yet these expressions are second hand accounts of another humans experiences.

Writing, music, painting, drawing, etc…they all express feelings but never the feeling itself. We try to simulate other peoples experiences by putting ourselves in their position, but never exactly feeling what they are feeling.

We were all created equally yet we are all unique in our own way. Where does that uniqueness come from? Lets say Jimi Hendrix and John Lennon were both in the same car accident together and they both decided to write their own song about it…those would have been 2 COMPLETELY different songs! Hendrix would probably have one of his epic guitar solos in his song whereas Lennon would’ve probably written a song with crazy creative lyrics and not so much guitar solos. But WHY? Perception. The way you perceive things makes you who you are.

Have you ever found yourself telling a friend to chill out or calm down? Well, that’s because you aren’t perceiving the situation the same way as your buddy who’s freaking out over who was just voted off of Dancing With The Stars is. It all comes down to being a product of your environment. If you’re parents are relaxed, laid back people, chances are you’re not going to end up dying of a heart attack because a ref blew a call during the Knicks game. But here’s the thing, even if we are a product of our environment and we are clones of our parents, do we ever truly know what another human being is thinking and feeling?

I read this book called “The Stranger Beside Me” by Ann Rule. It perfectly proves how one can completely deceive another. Rule tells a story about how she befriended a charming, well educated, good looking guy named Ted during the 1970’s. They went to parties together and even sent each other cards for special occasions. They built a true friendship throughout the years. All the more shocking when Ann found out that her friend Ted Bundy was actually a serial killer/rapist who eventually confessed to over 30 murders. That just goes to show you how crazy people can actually get without anyone even realizing. Ted Bundy was said to have had great potential, he could have even gone into politics if it weren’t for those monsters in the closet. Today, instead of governors sexting and having affairs with these little pole working daddy’s girls, can you imagine if we found out that a big named governor or senator was actually a SERIAL MURDERER?!? Who knows, politicians are some freaky individuals and I actually wouldn’t be that surprised if it ever turns out that one of them was the next Son of Sam.

It’s terrible when someone takes their own life and in a lot of cases it’s very unexpected. A person can come off as absolutely fine one day and the next day they’re dead due to a self inflicted wound. It’s pretty scary when you think about it: people can mask their true feelings and keep them completely to themselves till the point where it’s too late. I actually knew someone who committed suicide. He was a real likeable guy, there were a lot of people who cared for him and loved him. A few friends and myself were playing ball with this dude two days before he passed away. He seemed fine that day, smiling, shooting some hoops, he was just a normal dude hanging out at the park. When I heard the news a few days later I was totally dumbfounded. I didn’t understand it…I was just with this dude and now he was gone forever. It’s crazy how hopelessness and negativity can take over a persons mind and drives people to the point where they self destruct.

We live amongst each other, we laugh and cry together, but we are animals of solitude. If we are not happy with ourselves it doesn’t matter how we interact with others, we are still going to be unhappy. Interaction with others definitely helps us stay happy and sane but having a healthy social life will not answer all of our problems. We can see and feel another human, hell we can even look inside of them in this day and age, but we will never know what it’s like to be that person. Perception is what makes us our own island universe. Together yet alone.
